Hey Jeffrey, I don’t personally know you, but I read up on your blog a lot…and I am wondering 2 things. First off, why don’t you just get a digital camera (I just got the Nikon D70 and it is great)…then use mpix.com for any prints you want. Second, why don’t you add support for RSS so I don’t have to keep coming back to the website for updates! Later… PS: Love the pic of you (not on this site) when you were laying on the cement bench thing with your head hanging off the side.
Hi Corey. I’m still getting to know myself. Anyhow, sometimes if I want to photoshop, I’ll photoshop. But before I even got into digital, i was all b/w film. I love having something solid to keep of my photography. I could easily saturate my digital photos, burn in the edges and save the original copy but there isn’t much fun in that. Plus, I’m not a photographer. I’ll never be a photographer. I’m majoring in photography but it’s second to graphic design.
I love balance and contrast in my life, like balancing craft with experimentation. Balancing digital photography and processing. I like being in control of adjusting my aperture, shutter speed, agitation, timing, temperature, and enlarging–because it urges me to get it right not from the shutter of my lens, but the thought process that occurs in my head– previsualizing an enhancement of this reality we live (corny, I know). But, sometimes all those steps are just flat out tedious.
Black and white is my foundation; I didn’t learn photography by messing with Jasc Paintshop Pro in 9th grade. Putting a lens flare in all illogical places didn’t teach me anything and Photoshop is just a tool. Adobe Creative Suite.
I hold much more personal value of achieving what I previsioned in a photograph or something that just happened through the spontaneity of just capturing a moment in a nice little saturated piece of film.
Countlessly, I’ve seen people exhibit their work and explain and just kill the beauty of a photograph when the person says “I just pointed the camera and shot it. I didn’t know it would turn out like this.” I think to myself, “But it’s so beautiful” What a murder. If I ever exhibit, I don’t wanna show that my photos are consistenly rounded–that at least some thought went into the picture whether digital or b/w. One, at the most, might be a happy accident, but otherwise, I’ll pass.
As far as the Lomo goes, I love it. But it only covers a speck of what I want to do. It’s all about application. How, when why and where am I going to use my Lomo? I already know. My Lomo isn’t my universal solution to all my photographs. It’s just another series to add to the exhibition I will never have.
Pictures of my environment and the people who occupy it. The only pics I’ve taken and plan on taken are people in my life and the environment around me. It’s a snapshot. It’s for a photo album. And if 1 or 2 of the images are suitable for a design, I’ll scan the negative at 400 DPI 13 x 19″ or something.
My Lomo is a toy. My Nikon FE and FM are is like a 60s Strat to John Frusciante. My digital camera (outdated Sony 717 which I still love but would love a Nikon D70 or Canon 20D) are economic solutions to take photographs without having to develop. There is no universal solution to what I want, and if there were, I probably would despise it as much as I despise Live Trace in Illustrator CS2.
If I’m passionate about something I want to work with it intimately. I want to jot my ideas, brainstorm, sketch thumbnails 98493875894325 hours before I bring them to the computer for a design. I want to to stick with a 28mm, 50mm or 100mm lens for photography so I can adjust the distance between me and the subject. Convenience is pretty much out of the factor when I want certain results.
As for RSS, I don’t know much about web design and web development, all I know about RSS is that OSX Tiger added RSS support for Safari or something. I use Firefox so, not sure if I’m missing out on anything.
I know this little entry seems like a justification to every little thing I do and think but truth is, it was a good opportunity to let whoever reads this thing get a clearer idea of why I do the things I do. If it helps… if not, it’s ok because I write for me.
There’s just so many things people can do before they get to the computer. starting from scratch on a computer will take you nowhere but into that digital abyss. Who ever read all of this, I fear for your health. Jog a mile or two =)
Remember this? Imagestation. I forgot I didn’t add links to my site. Woops. I’ll wait ’til Apple fixes my laptop. I’m stealing Kate’s right now.
